The Story of the Ma Family Coffee Farm
Many people ask us why it's called "Ma Family Coffee Farm."
Actually, the name comes from our three children: Manow, Maprang, and Matum. We took the word "Ma" from our family name and it became the name of this coffee farm.
Our farm is located in Ban Pang Khon, Huai Chom Phu Subdistrict, Chiang Rai Province, at an altitude of approximately 1,280 meters above sea level. My parents have been growing coffee here for over 40 years.
As my parents got older, Ken and Waew discussed what would happen to the family coffee farm if we didn't return to continue the family business.
At that time, we didn't think farming was easy at all. On the contrary, we knew it was tiring, the income was uncertain, and it required a lot of time. But in the end, we chose to return home because we wanted to be with our parents, take care of them, and preserve the profession that had supported our family for so long.
Initially, we didn't grow specialty coffee. We bought coffee cherries from villagers and sent them to factories, like many others in the village. Until one day, we felt that if we wanted to improve our lives, we had to start creating value for our own coffee.
We started learning processing, even though we had no background, no capital, and no one to tell us what to do. There were many mistakes and many moments of discouragement, but we persevered. Because we believed that one day we would succeed.
We tried entering our coffee into competitions. The first year we didn't win, but we came back and improved. The following year, our coffee started to gain recognition, giving us more encouragement and reinforcing our confidence that we were on the right track.
Today, we oversee almost every step of the coffee-making process ourselves, from the garden to the cup our customers drink. Some nights, even when it rains, we have to get up and check on the drying area to prevent the coffee from spoiling. We learn and improve with every season.
Later, we started building small guesthouses on the farm because we wanted visitors to see the real lifestyle of coffee farmers. We built the first few houses ourselves. It was tiring, but each one is meaningful to our family.
Today, the Mae Family Coffee Farm offers more than just coffee; it also has guesthouses, a cafe, and a small space we want to share with everyone – a place to relax, chat, and experience life in the mountains.
